Interior Designer in Essex

Tone is an Essex studio. We design exceptional homes across the county’s premium belt — and we run every commission director-led, from the first survey to the final reveal.

Essex holds some of the most considered private housing in the South East, and very little of it is uniform. The county runs from the Epping Forest fringe — Chigwell, Loughton, Buckhurst Hill — through the Brentwood and Shenfield commuter belt to Chelmsford, the county’s only city, and out to the estuary villages. A Tone commission has to read that range: a gated contemporary new-build in Chigwell asks for entirely different decisions than an Edwardian house on Loughton’s forest edge or a Georgian property in central Chelmsford.

The Elizabeth Line has changed the brief across the county. Families who would once have stayed in London are taking the space that Essex offers — and they arrive with prime-London expectations of finish, joinery and project management. That is precisely the gap Tone is built for: a London standard of design delivered by a studio that is actually here, that knows the local trades, the planning officers and the building stock first-hand.

We are a whole-home studio first. The work the practice is structured around is the single brief that covers every space — reception rooms, kitchen and dining, principal suite, family bedrooms, bathrooms, and the rooms a serious house now earns: a gym, a media room, a wine room, a proper dressing room. Held together by one director and one set of supplier relationships, the house resolves as one piece rather than a sequence of unrelated rooms.

Every project follows the Tone Commission: Discovery, then Concept, Design & Specification, then the Commission itself, then the Reveal. Each home is fully surveyed before a single decision is made, and you receive fully costed proposals before any work begins — no open-ended estimates, no surprises at the end. Manong directs each project personally; the studio takes on a deliberately small number of concurrent commissions so that director attention is real, not nominal.

Tone’s evidenced Essex work spans both private homes and the county’s landmark hospitality rooms — the Funky Monk in Epping, The Starr in Great Dunmow, The Axe & Compasses — alongside private residences such as the Witham project and the Grays residence. That hospitality experience matters to homeowners too: it is design that has to perform under daily use and still feel considered, which is exactly the test a family home sets.

Frequently asked

Which areas of Essex does Tone Interiors work in?

Tone works across Essex’s premium residential belt, with concentrations in Chelmsford, Brentwood, Shenfield, Chigwell and Loughton, plus the surrounding villages. As an Essex-based studio we also work across Prime London and into Hertfordshire.

What does a Tone interior design project in Essex cost?

Every commission is bespoke, so we do not publish fixed prices. You receive a fully costed proposal before any work begins, with fee structure and project budget set out clearly. Fee bands are discussed openly at the Discovery stage.

Do you only take on whole-home projects?

The studio is structured around whole-home commissions, but we also take single-room and refurbishment projects where the brief is significant. The starting point is always a Discovery meeting to understand the property and the brief.

Is Tone Interiors accredited?

Yes. Tone is SBID accredited, and the studio is director-led — Manong personally directs every project rather than delegating to a junior team.
