Tone’s pub work is rooted in real Essex venues. The Starr at Great Dunmow and The Axe & Compasses are delivered projects — the kind of established, characterful rooms that take years to feel right and minutes to ruin with the wrong refurbishment.

The hardest thing in a pub is restraint. A country pub or gastropub carries history, regulars and a sense of place, and the job is to make it warmer, more comfortable and more profitable without stripping out what made people come. Tone designs with the building — its fabric, its fireplaces, its low beams and its awkward corners — rather than imposing a scheme that could be anywhere.

Underneath the character there is hard commercial work: laying out covers and the bar so the room earns across quiet weekday lunches and full Sunday services, getting the lighting and acoustics right so the place is welcoming at noon and alive at night, and specifying materials that look handsome and survive a working pub. Design here is squarely an investment in trade.
